AMAA Legislation History

1924

  • Women’s Auxiliary of the American Medical Association establishes Legislation Committee.

1930’s

  • Collaboration with AMA for legislation addressing preventative health programs.

1940’s

  • Promotion of legislation supporting physical fitness and support of war efforts.

1960’s

  • Women’s Auxiliary of the AMA (WHAM) establishes Operation Hometown and Operation Coffee Cup to assist the AMA in legislative efforts to prevent passage of the King-Anderson on Federal Healthcare for the Aged (Medicare).
  • Promotion of the AMA legislative “One Dozen Days” public affairs kit.  

1980’s

  • AMA Auxiliary participates in AMA Adolescent Health Initiative.
  • AMAA president joined leaders of 17 national organizations at White House at special meeting with Ronald Reagan and the auxiliary is honored for its efforts to prevent drug abuse.
  • Collaboration with AMA to prevent decrease of physician Medicare reimbursement rate.
  • AMPAC establishes the biennial Belle Chenault Award that recognizes an AMA Alliance member who has made significant personal contributions of time and talent in assisting political candidates in their quest for elective office at the federal and state level.

1990’s

  • AMA Auxiliary joins the AMA Campaign Against Family Violence.
  • AMA Alliance calls on grassroots to urge U.S. House to pass medical liability reform.

2000’s

  • 2003 - Legislative Education and Awareness Promotion (LEAP) Awards are launched to recognize unique, creative, legislation projects from state and county Alliances.
  • 2005 - President George Bush recognizes the 10th Anniversary of SAVE.
  • 2007 - AMA Alliance joins the AMA in a focused effort against violence and abuse with a representative to the AMA National Advisory Council.
  • 2008 - Days at the Capitol legislative advocacy gatherings of AMA Alliance members in Washington D.C. for Medicare and Tort reform.

2010’s

  • 2014 – One year delay in the implementation of ICD-10.
  • 2015 – Final Repeal of Medicare’s Sustainable Growth Rate formula.
